Boudoir Marathon

I'm just going to start things off with this...

Boudoir
–noun
a woman's bedroom or private sitting room.
Origin:
1775–85;  < French:  literally, a sulking place ( boud ( er ) to sulk + -oir -ory2

These days, Boudoir is less about the pouting, and more about the sexy, at least, to me.  This last weekend I was involved in a Boudoir Marathon with photographer Melissa Raimondi of Candy and Cream Boudoir.  We had 10 girls arrive to get hair and makeup done (my job) and then spend an hour in their skivies (or less) and pose for beautiful sexy photos like the one you see above.
Since announcing this Marathon, I have had numerous people asking me what Boudoir is all about, and why people do it, and obviously I can't tell you why everyone does it, but I can tell you why I did it - the ultimate ego boost!
Even though I am a professional makeup artist, I typically don't really do a lot in terms of hair and make-up on a day to day basis.  Currently my hair is up in a pony tail, and I'm wearing a pale eye shadow and coat of mascara.  That's it.  And that's typically all I ever do for hair and make-up during the day.  My look is... Meh.  I feel I look "nice" not especially pretty or anything.  And this is also how my friends see me too, hair pulled back, minimal makeup, jeans and a t-shirt, and flip flops.
On vacation in Kelowna - still the same look :)

So when I suddenly pull this out:

People notice:
Natasha  wow! You look H-O-T Mrs. T!
Ben  RAWR!!!
Mari WHOA! I think I just grew a penis.
Tyler GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaron  rawr
Bettina  lucky Ben!
Sarah Jane  Oh hai...do you come here often?
Darrel-Lynne  In the words of Tyra Banks "fierce!!!"
Abigail  Rawr,
Erik  Up top, Mr. T! <smack!> Right on. ("This has been another episode of Locker Room Masterpiece Theatre...")
Sara  Holy, you are STUNNING!
Elisa YEOW! ♥
Chelsea  DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN Heather... That's some hot stuff right there :)

And what girl doesn't want to feel amazing now and then?

Some of the ladies attending our marathon were doing the pictures for a significant other, some were just doing it for themselves - and I love that!  One of our beautiful ladies, Miss. S told us that she was reading the website Post Secret, and someone had written in saying that when their grandmother had passed away, they were cleaning out her house, and found an album of boudoir pictures that her grandmother had done when she was younger, and she realized that it was a sassy part of her grandmother that she had never saw before, and she loved that she now knew this secret.  That post stuck with Miss. S, and she too wanted to be able to have that sexy little secret that perhaps someone will stumble across years down the road too.  Everyone has their own reasons, but so far I haven't heard one that didn't have some aspect of "I want to look and feel amazing!" and I can't argue with that!
Before I got to work on each of the ladies, we took a Before picture, and in each before, all of the girls were fresh faced and happy and sweet and in some cases, kind of shy, and within an hour, suddenly showed this inner bad ass confidence that allowed Melissa to capture shots like this:

Or this:

And now that Melissa is able to post a couple of the shots from the Marathon, our facebook walls are now being filled with comments like this from the girls:

"Everyone woman needs to do this at least once in their life. You (Melissa) and Heather are an amazingly fabulous team and I cannot wait to do this again!!!!"
"You and Heather are amazing. I would recommend doing this to anybody, such an ego boost. ♥"
"It was sooo much fun and Melissa and Heather are amazing!!!!!!"
Which gives me a total Ego Boost!!  Melissa and I have the same mindset when it comes to our work - we love making things pretty, and if we've gotten just the right eye shadow, or just the right pose, and made someone's day, then that makes us feel pretty darn wonderful!!

Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun...

... I miss you.

Every year Alberta's weather test my loyalty to Canada, and every year I almost get fed up enough to want to seek out warmer cities... almost.

Truth be told, I love Canada, I love Alberta, and Edmonton is growing on me :p  This is my home and always will be, I won't leave, but I can still threaten to pack my bags on cold or rainy days.  And this summer has had a lot of them.

Looking at the weather report the last few days has just been more and more depressing as the days progress.  On Monday:

Monday - Rain
Tuesday - Cloud
Wednesday - Hot Sun
Thursday - Awesome Happy Sunshine
Friday - Holy Crap it's Gorgeous out
Saturday - Break out the BBQ It's awesome out here!

On Tuesday:

Tuesday - We lied, it's going to rain today too
Wednesday - Cloudy and Windy
Thursday - Today will be warm, we promise!
Friday - You're gonna love the weather today!
Saturday - You can still have the BBQ party!

On Wednesday:

Wednesday - Okay, It's going to rain today too
Thursday - Still rain, but we promise it'll get better after today!
Friday - Cloudy with a little sun - still do-able!
Saturday - Maybe bring a sweater, but it'll still be nice!

... and so on and so on.

I seriously wish the Weather people would stop getting my hopes up.  Just say it - "Rain every day.  It will be cold, it will be windy, it will be miserable, and if you want to have any sort of social life, just pack an umbrella and deal!"   So that when it's actually sunny we are pleasantly surprised, rather than let down that once again we awake to find water on the ground again.

Ben told me a horrible stat this morning - of the last 43 days, 33 of them have been Raining.  Seriously?  It's July!  I fully expected this in June, having come from Calgary, where June tends to be the "rainy month" where the river overflows and basements flood every year (I still cant believe when people are surprised each year), but come July - the sun comes out, dries everything up, and gives Alberta residents enough sun to keep them happy, and completely forget about all the crappy weather we deal with the other 11 months of the year.

But here we sit - July 15th.  I'm sitting in a tank top, skirt, and flip flops (wishful thinking on my part), and I'm seriously considering a coffee just to warm me up a little bit.  Outside my window is wind and dark grey clouds, and although the weather forecast isn't projecting rain... I feel it's probably imminent.

Last Friday, I had a client come to me for Hair and make-up for a wedding she was a bridesmaid in.  Once she left my studio polished and done up, she ran to her car (in the rain) to head to the wedding.  A couple days ago, she sent me pictures for my portfolio, the first line in the email reading "The rain completely destroyed my hair...."  *sigh*

Later that night we had a Hot Tub party on our Deck to celebrate my sister in law's Birthday - in the wind and the rain.  It actually turned out pretty fun because the cool wind combined with the warmth of the water felt pretty awesome - but running errands and getting groceries for the party ahead of time wasn't awesome.

I'm such a Summer Baby - I need the sun.  We're already more than half way through summer and I don't feel like it's even begun yet!  It's kind of depressing though - come september the days will get shorter, the weather greyer and colder.... that's a month and a half away!

I'm begging you Mother Nature, please bring the Sun out everyday from here until September.  If you need me to tough it through the -30, the snow and the sleet, then I need you to do this for me.  I'll even brave the mosquitoes, if it means I can spend time outside without a hoodie or jacket in tow.

My Rain Poncho has had more use this summer than my sunblock - clearly this needs to be rectified immediately.

Adventures in Running!

I've fallen in love with Running!

In May I met Melissa.  She's a photographer that worked on one of my clients, and messaged me about doing a Boudoir Marthon together.  Shortly after that initial message, we've since met for coffee, and message back and forth all day long.  One day she asked if I wanted to go running with her.  I haven't run in years - so of course I said yes!

Getting closer to the day I was getting more and more nervous - Melissa runs 6k every day, and 20 K on Sundays - there was no way I was going to be able to keep up with her, and I was really worried about going with her because I didn't want to sacrifice her workout to wait for me.  On the day of, we met at the top of Victoria Park Road, and took off running (more of a Jog really - I was relieved, I'm not built for speed).  I made it down around Victoria Golf Course to River Road before I had to request a walking pace for a while.  I was still impressed with how far I went!

The Red Dot is where we start and end

After walking for a while, I decided my legs were feeling better and I could run again - but my lungs had other plans and after just a couple minutes of running I had to walk again.

Melissa was awesome about slowing down, and said that it was a nice change of pace, and that she was still getting a workout.  And even though I didn't do as well as I hoped, I was still stoked for the distance that I did run, and was hooked, I wanted to do it again!

Since then, Melissa and I have met up again to run, but life seems to have a way of getting in the way, (as does the weather) and we haven't run together as often as we both would have liked.  Last night I decided I was going to run by myself around my new neighborhood, so I strapped on my iPod arm band, dialed in to my RunKeeper app on my phone, and took off running.

I felt amazing, and was loving the cool wind of the evening until I noticed the white Crossfire.

It pulled out of a residential street ahead of me, and turned left to face the same direction I was running, but rather than speeding up once completeing their turn, they slowed down to a crawl, until they were stopped in the middle of the street (forcing a truck behind them to go around them)  I thought nothing of it, and figured maybe someone was test driving their friends new car, and kept running past.

Once I passed the Crossfire, it took off down the street, and I continued running.  A moment later, it had looped the block, slowed down to pass me again, and stopped just up the block ahead of me.  At this point I was thinking that maybe they were lost and were waiting to ask me directions or something, but when I got closer to the car, it drove away again.  A few minutes later, it turned around and passed me again, once again slowing down. By now I was severely creeped out, and turned in to a block to get away from it.

I looped the block and as I got back on the same road again, and crossed the crosswalk of the block I had just turned down, the Crossfire was sitting idle in the block facing the crosswalk.  Once I crossed the road, the crossfire drove to the main street and turned right to pass me again - once again slowing down and waiting just up the road.

When I got closer, the car pulled away and turned the corner ahead onto my street.  As I rounded the corner the Crossfire was sitting a couple houses down, and once again as I neared the car, it took off down the block.  By this point, I was conflicted as to whether or not I would run further or turn in, but when I saw the crossfire turn around at the end of my block and come back toward me - I made up my mind and headed inside.  And locked the deadbolt.

I know... now the creep knows where I live - but the way I saw it, I would rather he know where I am behind a locked door with my Husband, than be able to get to me defenseless on the street.  (if that was his intent)

At the same time, although this does look super sketchy, I have been known to have a very overactive imagination (horror movies are out for me - I live them for days and convince myself someone is in the house at night), so it could be someone was just learning stick, or looking at houses on the block (Ben and I have been known to slowly drive around neighborhoods that we like just to look at the houses), and it might not have a thing to do with me - but my imagination took over and freaked me out to the point where I have already requested that Ben come with me on my run's from now on.

Even just relaying the story to Ben, the first thing he did was go back outside and see if he could see the car to go give it a piece of his mind.  The next thing, was take me and go for a walk back up the street to where I first saw the car pull out and see if we can get a licence plate.  Unfortunately the car was nowhere to be seen the second time out - but I did get a little longer workout by going back out - so there's that :)

The guy never actually talked to me, and drove away every time I approached, so it could have been harmless enough - maybe he was lost, but figured him sitting on the side of the road as I was getting nearer would creep me out, so he kept driving away, so I wouldn't be nervous of him (it didn't work).  I don't know, I'm still going to run in the neighborhood, but Ben is going to come out with me, and ride his bike along side, or run with me, and I'm going to be extra cautious around White Crossfires from now on.

Tonight however, I'll be running with Melissa in the River Valley :)
